At the same time, the production demands induced by the conflict led to considerable growth in the ranks of the scientific and technical intelligentsia. It also generated a new appreciation among academics for applied research and a recognition of the need to better orient scientific findings toward practical, productive ends. While these developments had little impact on the course of the conflict, they established the foundations of the "new" Soviet scientific and technological culture which followed in the wake of the Russian Civil War.
