They witnessed and participated in the mobilization of parents, brothers and sisters, and the consequent sacrifices, hardships and bereavement. They were exploited by wartime propaganda as a symbol of innocence, needing protection. They were directly exposed to the practices for eliciting consensus through illustrated comics, posters, and school books. They were encouraged to adopt a patriotic commitment through the nascent scout organizations. Finally, quite a few working-class children were employed in war industries and in the building sites which constructed fortifications and shelters in the zone behind the front. en en d Antonio Gibelli Children and War (Italy) l 2calibre (2.5.0) [http://calibre-ebook.com] i 9International Encyclopedia of the First World War i 1914-1918-Online i First World War i WW1 i Children and War (Italy) q ,41f43be4-dd53-4043-8248-289ed1a32707 p 4calibre:41f43be4-dd53-4043-8248-289ed1a32707 EBOK j !2014-10-08T00:00:00+00:00 t Children and War (Italy)
