For your discussion of the centenary in The Netherlands, we ask you to keep in mind the following:
-Your article should primarily focus on the centenary and the legacy of the war not on the history or events of the war itself. Please keep the historical background to a minimum.
-The article should address as many aspects of official and unofficial commemoration as possible (exhibitions, conferences, parades, theatre, documentaries, etc.)
-It should address the political, cultural, and social trends in commemorative activities and practices.
-In contrast to our “Commemoration – Cult of the Fallen” articles (see https://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/search/?fq%5Bquery%5D=Commemoration+-+Cult+of+the+Fallen), this section focuses on contemporary not historical commemoration.
-Your article is intended for a general as well as specialist audience. Please do not assume too much background knowledge of diverse locales.
Some other questions you might want to consider:
– Were commemorative events state driven or popular initiatives?
– Did commemoration occur on a regional/local or national level?
– Where did commemoration take place? (gallery, museum, internet, school, monuments, historiography (op-ed, scholarly articles, lectures))
– How/how much were centenary events funded?
– Did the centenary create any changes in memory?
– Was there popular interest in the Centenary? Were there public debates?
– Who were the ‘memory agents’ behind the commemoration and what was their personal investment?
